With its tally of 19 medals, UCLA would have placed 14th overall in the medal count at the Summer Olympic Games in Athens, beating out Hungary, Greece, Brazil and Canada. Winning gold were Lisa Fernandez ’95, Tairia Mims Flowers ’04, Amanda Freed ’03, Stacey Nuveman ’02 and Natasha Watley ’04 for softball; Joanna Hayes ’01 (pictured) for the 100m hurdles; Monique Henderson ’05 for the 4x400m relay; and former UCLA women’s soccer coach Joy Fawcett for soccer. Silver medals were won by Mohini Bhardwaj ’03 for women’s gymnastics; Tanya Harding for softball (Australia); and Mebrahtom Keflezighi ’99 for the men’s marathon. Taking home bronze medals were Robin Beauregard ’03, Natalie Golda ’05, Thalia Munro ’05, Nicolle Payne ’01, Kelly Rulon ’07 and Amber Stachowski ’06 for women’s water polo; and Holly McPeak ’92 and Elaine Youngs ’93 for beach volleyball.
