the night we watched as the 1,500 refugees clambered on board the
giant Hercules. By noon, the last of the planes had been loaded
and was ready to depart. Haggard, exhausted, we walked onto the
final flight. We were filled with relief that so many had been flown
to safety, but also worried for all those who remained behind. As
we rose into the sky above the smoldering city, many of us made
a silent vow to return.
Robinson teaches about political violence and the struggle for human
rights in Southeast Asia. He returned in November to East Timor
as a member of a U.N. delegation to investigate human-rights abuses
that followed the referendum.
